Iron staining is one common problem from high amounts of iron in the water. It usually looks like a brown or orange colored stain on plumbing fixtures. Treatment with a carbon filter can dramatically reduce the level of iron in the water. This can be done with a large carbon tank similar to a water softener. A more common approach is to use a radial flow carbon filter that can easily be changed when depleted. For a whole house solution this normally done with a 10" or 20" Big Blue filter housing like the one shown below. The 20" version provides maximum flow and filter life.
